Billy Cox once wrote, “Life will only change when you become more committed to your dreams than you are your comfort zone.”
Truer words have never been spoken.
In 2009, through the unexpected, and tragic, death of my little brother and the difficult demise of my marriage, I found myself back in the small town I grew up in. My entire world had been flipped upside down. I was hurt. I was broke. I was scared and I needed a job. In my darkest hour, I did not know where my life was headed. To say I was out of my comfort zone would have been a vast understatement.
In dire need of a job, I responded to an ad in a local paper from a dental office --“Dental Assistant Needed. No Experience Required. Will Train.” I had no dental assisting experience, so it was finally something I felt qualified to apply for. After the interview, which I thought went well, I was told that they did not feel I was the right choice for an assistant; I was devastated. They did, however have a different opportunity for me. Despite my lack of dental experience at the time, and being pushed even further out of my comfort zone, I was offered, and accepted, the position of Treatment Coordinator from a dentist that saw something in me that day that I hadn’t yet seen in myself. For that, I will forever be grateful. I dove head first into the field of dentistry a complete novice. I instantly fell in love with all things dental and quickly worked my way from Treatment Coordinator into Office Management and Training. I found the dental industry to be fascinating! It was, and is, continuously evolving to bring substantial advancements to the forefront of oral care.
Despite the array of advancements, there was always one major issue that stood out to me that no one ever seemed to have an advanced solution for. If you have ever managed a dental practice, you know exactly what I am talking about; that one type of phone call that can send you into panic mode before you’ve even finished your shower or had your first cup of coffee.
What are the scariest words you can say to an office manager?.....
“I won’t be able to make it to work today”.
Why is it so hard to find good candidates to cover last minute staffing emergencies when a team member calls out sick, has a sick child, jury duty or simply needs a vacation? How can it be so difficult for so many amazingly talented dental personnel to find work when they are actively looking for and needing to work without feeling like they are begging? Each were asking for, and needing, the very thing the other was offering. Where was the disconnect? What was missing?
That is where the idea for Stop Gap Dental, LLC began!
Stop Gap Dental was created for the Dental Industry by the Dental Industry. It is a culmination of insights and research into some of the unavoidable problems and stress triggers we face in dentistry. Welcome to Stop Gap Dental!
Thank you to everyone who has inspired and encouraged me along this crazy journey. Stop Gap Dental, LLC is dedicated to everyone who has ever had to walk through darkness in order to find their true light.
Along with our passion for dentistry, Stop Gap Dental, LLC is driven by our passion for giving back to our community. As my family and I navigated through the grief of my brother’s passing, we have always found solace in serving others. To honor my brother, Hoyt, and his giving heart, we have formed The H.O.Y.T. Project, Inc, a 501c3 nonprofit organization, which is dedicated to providing resources and care for our veterans and homeless.
A portion of all proceeds from Stop Gap Dental, LLC will go directly to this project and back into our communities. By using, and sharing, our app, you too are helping shine a light of hope for those in need.
